97% of the time that’s problem. Vent went bad and pulled gas in to canister. Pull canister and shake and see if has fluid in it
when I changed my ex wifes canister in her 04 suburban it was bone dry, the problem was still present immediately afterwards, it has been a little while since I have checked it, presuming I pull it again and it has gas in it, then how do I deal with this "vent"

You need to read full tank pressure sensor with a scanner that tell if bent is good or bad

You need to make sure the lines are clear. There have been plenty of reports of the charcoal pellets clogging the vent line.

so could I in theory just shove a wire thru it or something? I am not too concerned about this so much anymore but if it is a easy fix with something as simple as that then I guess I could try it.

When you took off the box, did it rattle? The pellets break loose and can find their way into the vent. Can't find the thread(s) now, but there are a couple...

I replaced the box in the summer, I think the old one did rattle when I took it out that's a good point I didn't think much of it then.
