Ok first time putting clear coat over black rims .
Ok I got first coat of clear coat on I did notice if you go to thick it like wrinkles . So when you put clear coat on do you put like one coat then wet sand 1500-2000 grit then put another coat ? It seems to me it's only way to get to the wet look finish to get max shine . Or I could be wrong .. any pointers are welcome.

I’ve only shot smaller parts but I did 3-4 coats with no sanding. I shot the 2-4th coats real heavy. What brand are you using? U-Pol 1 is great.

What are putting the clear over? What kind of clear?

Wrinkling is usually caused chemical reaction. The surface that the clear being put on not dry enough , putting to much clear can cause wrinkling , to even what ever you used as your black base reacting to the clear.

My best advice is to make sure your base is good and dry , then do a medium wet coat , then at least a fairly wet coat. Wait 10-15 mins between coats of clear. Getting the "wet" look is is a fine line between it and runs. Unless you want to wet sand and polish. My experience polishing rims sucks. I stripped the paint off my Camaro rims and sanded and polished them. Never again....lol.

I'm learning... I got it wet sanded with 1500 grit on first coat of clear . Yes all black color dried for 48 hours . But I'm going for finally clear coat tomorrow. I'm going to try the final coat .. then polish it .. we'll see what happens . It's all just Rust-Oleum wheel clear coat on Rust-Oleum black with Rust-Oleum 2 coats of primer fill witch was first coat because of rust pitting on steel rim . I'm used cheaper paint as its my first attempted to clear coat.

Far as small wrinkle spots . As it seems its when I got to thick on the first coat of clear on the color .
It did it 2 times to me .. so it's like it only does on first coat clear on color .

I'm sure more expensive paints would be more forgiving.

Primer then color . Now these were steel rim with surface rust . So it's not perfection it's more like getting them the best I can . You can see I didn't spend any time sanding on center where center cap covers .36bc6eaf2b77ce916aa4cc691cfd8c28.jpg6d390198c4dd0d19c326e8783de0b866.jpg

I had bad luck until I tried the U-Pol
1. It might be the product you’re using, I’ve never heard of anyone using Rust-Oleum clear so I can’t say if it’s good or not.

Ok it's starting to come around here's second coat clear it was easy to get droplets to pool now. It's drying for 24 hours .. I'm going to wet sand and polish see if that's enough . I should be able to get orange peel out of it . And get some nu finish on and some carnuba wax . We'll see how it comes out . Or do you think I should go 3 Rd coat of clear coat ? eb96724a8b26cd233589ce5eaab2c5be.jpg
