So I've got a clunk and took care of the usual culprits first. U joints. Greased the yoke.
But I can feel and hear a clunk switching from D to R. Also sometimes during light acceleration.
About 185k , I don't tow. But who knows past owners.
Does slop in the rear end require a rebuild. Or start looking for a donor?

Pinion bearing in the rear? Pinion nut loose? I have had the exact same symptoms on chevy rears and this was the problem on two of them.

You got probs if your rear pinion nut is loose considering how much its torqued when installed properly. Done incorrectly OR sabotage.

A minor hum. Not full time. Doesn't change with speed.
