I just purchased a used '99 Tahoe 4-dr with 232k miles on it. It has automatic transmission and push button 4WD. I noticed the column shifter is very hard to move out of and into "P", and fairly stiff through the rest of the gears as well. My '96 Tahoe doesn't have this problem. I'm worried that something in the shift mechanism will break with continued use. I also have zero experience working on my Tahoe's shifter/linkage.
So my questions are:
1. Is this a common concern?
2. Can the shift linkage be lubricated or adjusted, and if so, how?
3. Is there a defective part in the shifter mechanism that needs replaced?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me in this matter.

Mine is messed up like that also it is apart above the brake pedal that wen u press the brake it unlocks the lever sorry but not sure what its called but i just use to turn the key two click and shift into neutral then start my truck. But i got tired of doing that so u just disconnected the wires leading from that part and it worked just fine all lights still work steering still locks wen key is out the only thing is when the truck is running and in park you dont have to step on the brake to release shift lever the wire colors are green and black hope this helps

unknown at this time.
your shift cable under the driver carpet may be binding. unfortunately it is not able to be or advisable to try lubricate it.
