I don't think the transmission gives any warning for fluid level like the engine will for oil or coolant. I would check the fluid level if nothing shows on the end of the stick then it's low for sure. Also you can disconnect the shifter cable and move it by hand p/r/n/d/l, get a helper and try it by hand in case your not adjusted on the cable correctly.

haha, to be honest I've done it on stuff I trust the ebrake on. it's just popping it in gear at idle. but definitely wouldn't tell other people to do it lol.

I have done it but not while was under the truck per sey, it didn't go anywhere but still only takes once

If your just verifying movement at the transmission lever when the selector is moved inside the engine doesn't have to be running, and I have set my phone on record under the vehicle then hopped in and moved the selector when I am alone.

it may move but does not confirm it is adjusted properly, it should click solid from position to position, which you can feel by hand.
the point of doing by hand is just to verify the transmission is operational or not, if it is operational and will not work by the cable then it needs the nut adjusted on the cable or the cable is not properly installed.
