I've searched all over the internet and this forum but can't find any solutions to this problem. My gear selector (P, R, N, D, 3, 2, 1) on my 96 tahoe is ridiculously hard to pull. Has this happened to anyone? Please let me know if you have any clue what might be going on. Thanks guys

We had another thread exactly like this one. Did you post the other one aswell? We already covered that it can be a switch that goes on the brake pedal that is the problem or in my case the planet gear blew but right before it was pretty hard

RE: Column Shifter Hard to Move

I posted a similar concern with my 1999 Tahoe a couple of days ago, and think I found the part needed to fix the problem. It's called the 'steering column shift control mechanism', and 1A Auto Parts has 'em for $106.95(aftermarket). Here's the description verbatim from their website:

This replacement Steering Column Shift Control Mechanism is just what you need to get your GM truck or SUV in good working condition again!
It mounts to the steering column on the RH (passenger side) and is what the shift lever attaches to. When the shift lever is moved to any position, P R N D 3 2 1, it moves the inner parts of the steering column, which is attached to the transmission shift linkage. It also has the park, shift lock cable attached to it so that will not allow the shift lever to move unless the key is entered into the key ignition and moved forward. This part is commonly broken when vehicles are stolen. It also is the cause of why some steering columns have a hard time of moving in and out of the park position.
If your steering column is having problems shifting and the cause is because of a bad or malfunctioning shift control mechanism, this is the part for you!
Features:
Attaches to the RH (passenger side) half of the steering column
Brand new component with park, lock cable attached
Replaces dealer part number: 26091246
Built to strict quality control standards
Only fits vehicles with Automatic Transmission (AT) and with a column shift
Fits both Tilt and Non Tilt Steering columns
This Steering Column Shift Control Mechanism is a great replacement part and has good cost savings over the price of a dealer part.
This part replaces:
OEM pn#: 26091246
DORMAN pn#: 905-101

See the 1A Auto website http://www.1aauto.com/1A/ChassisSuspension/Chevy/Tahoe/1ASTC00069/361760

Good luck and please keep us posted as to your results if you decide to go this route.

Hey Sam, if you install this part, lemme know how difficult it was to do, where you found instructions, and of course, whether or not it solved your problem. If I get to it first, I'll do the same for you... Steve

'96 Tahoe LS 4dr, 4wd, auto., 182K mi. & '99 Tahoe LT 4dr, 4wd, auto., 232k mi., both bone stock except for spider injector upgrade which I recently installed on the '96.

It could also be your brake light switch which is much easier and cheaper than that other part. I was having trouble with my obs 2000 Tahoe Limited shifting out of park to drive and was told that was my culprit since brake lights were acting up as well. Changed it and now smooth shifting.
