Stay away from AAMCO!!!

I had a bad experience. I'd never go there again. I'd rather use a known good reputation individually owned trans specialist.

i need to get mine rebuilt soon too. i have 128k on it and i have a noticable 2nd gear slip. its drivin me nuts. I had a quote for $3500 from monroe transmission in newcastle ca. But that was for a built trans that he gauranteed for over 800 horses. shift kit and all that jazz.

I just want one that can handle about 400 horses. thats all i want to get out of my tahoe. any one know of anything from central cali to nor cal. im in roseville.

Do NOT use AAMCO. For a very brief period of time I took my fleet trucks to them. After a lot of trouble and a "nice" letter from my lawyer, on my last work truck they ended up installing a GM reman'd unit straight from a dealership. On their dime. Since then I only use GM reman'd units and install them myself. The write-off isn't worth that much headache.

It's extremely difficult to find a reputable trans shop now a days.

As for my personal vehicles, I rebuilt them myself for a number a years with good success.

Some track buddies of mine had great luck with Finish Line Transmissions out of Illinois. Their level 3 is a great reliable street unit for the budget minded. The problem is, if you're not doing the labor yourself it could get expensive with the shipping and paying a shop to do the labor.

what does it do performance wise?

it will firm up your shifts a little bit. do that and a BB tune when its done. you will be very happy with your truck. there are lots of threads here about here. use the search and you will get all the info you need.

I just had my trans rebuilt last week by Aamco. My buddy is the service manager for the Mercedez dealership in town and recommended them. Had I looked on here I probably wouldn't have used them but so far so good. They were exremely friendly and told me to come back in a couple of weeks so they can check everything out again. They even picked up the tow bill for me. Aamco may have a bad rep but I think it depends on the people, not the company. I've had one GM dealer quote me one price and another quote me several hundred less and they are only 15 minutes from each other.

I don't know about you guys, but a well built trans done once trumps getting a trans that will only last a year and then have to be replaced. I almost went with a performabuilt, but it only made sense if I did the labor myself. I have a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty from Jasper engines on my trans. They installed the shift kit when it was built and fixed a lot of problems the stock one seems to be plagued with. So far I have pounded on it and the shifts are firm with no torque management and running like a champ. They also included an 11"x11" trans cooler and all lines were replaced. gotta make sure the system is clean or you could blow your new one.

good luck with whatever you decide. 150k seems to be magic number on our trans. I made it to 165k before I popped the sunshell.
