I know, "holy crap you cut a hole in your truck!", but I think it was worth it. And I'm still formulating what to do with my spare tire mount but I'll figure that out in the future.

I removed the spare tire bracket and built this box, cut the floor and dropped it in. Also had to modify how the filter neck is routed but that was no big deal.

I want to add another brace underneath still to help make up for the structural loss of removing the spare tire bracket and figure out how to mount my spare tire under there somehow still.

The first cut is the hardest, it doesn't hurt as much after that

I like that!!! Clean and stealthy functionality/storage is always a good thing in my book.

Depending on your materials, it could be more robust than the spare tire bracing that you had before. Meaning you could incorporate bracing from the frame to the storage box (again depending on the storage area materials) or you could build a frame around the existing box for strength/mounting.

That was my initial thought too but I'm trying to come up with something besides that stupid cable system for the spare. The box is definitely plenty strong to support it For now I'm living on the edge driving without a spare

You could hard mount the spare in the factory area (using studs/nuts), but I know that may make access a bit difficult when needed.

Alternative mounting locations:

  • interior - cargo area (though this would defeat the purpose of your storage mod and sub mount)
  • exterior - bumper mount, roof mount
