While under the truck today I noticed I have a CV boot that split and is spitting grease. I know I can replace the assembly but that seems silly when an AC Delco boot is $20 on Rockauto. Watching a few videos and it looks easy enough to do. One question I have is about the clamps. I know the small one is tightened with a tool but what about the large one. It doesn’t look like it gets tightened. Do you just push it on kind of like a tire on a wheel or what?

One thing to keep in mind is if the bolt is split, you have probably slung the grease out of the CV joint and would need to inspect and if it is still good, regrease it. I have not heard of many people having good long term luck with the replacement boots.

I would recommend replacing the whole assembly.

I see it has been throwing grease for a bit not there is not a large amount yet. I see the cardone unit is $60 on rock auto so considering the work of R and R I may go that route.

Just had a boot go out the front d/s of our 08 AWD Denali. Caught it after about 25 miles. Took it in and indy tech advised it was contaminated with all kinds of crap. There were two options... replace the boot, he'd clean out all the crap as good as possible and hope all goes well or ... remove the axle, clean, grease, replace axle and boot and be done with it. I opted for #2 for $191.99 w/ part # GM-8228 that came with new boots.
