The 3,000 mile/oil change is a VERY conservative figure when determining when oil should be changed. It's like the dosage on over-the-counter medicine... They take the lowest amount that showed no adverse effects on the populous at large; the "safest bet" in other words.

aren't you supposed to get more mileage on synthetic oil? can it tell the diff between syn and conventional oil?

The car knows nothing about the oil type or quality, only the driving habits and conditions. It cant tell synthetic.

i understand that it can't tell the diff. but aren't we cheating our wallets if we change synthetic oil sooner. isn't synthetic supposed to last longer?
