Hey there, I've got a situation that I'm hoping someone can help me out with. I need a new fuel tank for my 4 door tahoe and it seems it has been discontinued by gm and there are no aftermarket suppliers. As I have learned the 2 door and 4 door tanks are very different and mounted in different locations. The 2 door mounts behind the rear axle where the spare tire would be, just like a suburban. The 4 door mounts on the left side in front of the axle like a silverado but with the fuel fill at the rear.

My tank is plastic and while the plastic itself is in good condition, the metal ring that holds the lock ring and sending unit down tightly has rusted away. I would attempt to cut out and epoxy in a new ring but I can't even find a stock image to go by. (not sure how reliable that would be anyways)

Is there anyone out there that has a used tank or know of a tank that closely resembles the original. Has anyone done a 2 door tank conversion? I can't be the only one who has encountered this problem.

Thanks in advance!

There used to be but they've closed down and all junk yards have come up empty. Unfortunately I live in an area that uses a ton of salt in the winter and anything used locally will likely be in very rough shape

Places like Keystone Automotive (part of LKQ) should have listings for aftermarket gask tanks for around $200. There's almost one of their stores in every state. They also sell or can get most of the locking rings, straps, filler neck, etc. I would google for a location nearest you and give them a call.

Yep, keystone was one of the first places I called actually. there's no such thing as an aftermarket tank for the 4 door, only the 2 door. They did however have a used one available.

The big problem is that I live on the Canadian side of the Detroit border and a used gas tank is considered dangerous goods and can't cross the border. In addition, the Detroit branch of keystone will not order anything unless you are there to pay for the order in person. It means 4 trips through border patrol and I have to get the tank installed before I can cross.

One heck of a hassel and a long time to be limping with a leaky tank. They might even impound me because of the smell of gasoline lol

Fortunately I was able to find one on the Canadian side that isn't great but with a little love should be usable.
I have never had such a terrible time trying to find a part for any car, let alone a vehicle whose body style was produced for a whole decade.

thanks for the suggestions! hope to get my replacement tank installed ASAP
