Need some help on my 2000 Tahoe. This started several months ago. When I hit a bump in the road or highway divider I get a drone type noise coming from the rear. Best way to describe it is like hitting a drum and a hermonic (spelling?) sound can be heard along with a slight vibration. I guessed driveshaft so I had the u-joints changed and driveshaft balanced. Still did it so I bought a salvage yard driveshaft installed it and it still makes the noise. Vehicle is stock and has 125,000 on it. Everything looks "ok" underneath that I can see. Any ideas?

It could be an axle bearing going bad or even a carrier bearing or pinion bearing but hitting a bump usually doesn`t cause any of these to go bad.

And since you`ve already replaced the u-joints and the driveshaft those bearings would be the next things i would check to find the noise.

Have you checked your exhaust system for holes? This sounds similar to something I had happen on another vehicle. My muffler and pipe had come loose, but it took a bump to knock it out of whack. Then there'd be a nice, louder droning. It wasn't fully obvious because most of the pipe was still routing through the muffler, but there was a leak before the muffler that made the noise. Make sense? Anyway, it may be worth checking for holes/leaks/loose connections in your exhaust system.

I have the same problem it's like a grinding noise coming from driver rear wheel area. Is it possible that could be something with the abs or brakes?

I have a 2005 yukon with what sounds like a similar problem. Everytime I hit a bump into hear a loud grinding type noise coming from the driver side rear tire. I have to come to a complete stop to get it to quit. Any possibility that it could be something with the antilock brake system?
