alright guys...i need some help or a suggestion. i installed a fan off of a supercharged thunderbird..motor from the taurus fan but the thunderbird fan is 16" and allows you to put your factory shroud back with no trimming. i hooked it up with low speed cutting on with a thermostat controller and high cutting on with a/c. well it worked for about 250 miles until my truck kept blowing ignition fuses and left me on the side of the road. now i hooked it up with the high speed to the thermostat controller and thats it.

its running off of a dorman 30 amp relay with a 30 amp inline fuse on my ignition wire. everytime the fan cuts on it makes a weird as noise and my battery gauge drops down to about 11 volts and sticks at around 12 till it cuts off. any ideas on how to improve that drag???

What gauge wire are you using? At least 10 gauge I hope, those fans are rumored to pull 75 amps on startup on the high speed, a 30 amp relay wont cut it either

Look into the CS144 or AD244 alternator swap if you're still running the stock 105 amp, I had the same voltage drop issues with my Taurus fan and a big 3 upgrade with a CS144 cured most of it

At a minmum one rated for 70-75 amps if your only gonna use the high speed, for the low speed you MIGHT get by with the 30 amp one. I used Bosch part #0-332-002-156, but have read other writeups where guys use Napa part# ST85

ok yea...im using that 30 for high speed which i knew was not enough and its dragging the battery down to 11 volts or less at startup. thanks for the advice man im going to order a 75 amp relay...that inline fuse...do i still need it and will it hurt to leave it with a 30 amp fuse in it.

A 30 amp fuse should be ok, it's kinda borderline so I used a 40, the initial startup load won't pop the fuse but over time will burn up the contacts inside the relay if it isnt rated for it

IT is recommended that you install a ASP underrive pulley for the Alterntor to boost up its power a bit. A smaller pulley will make it spin faster spitten out more amps!

aight cool ill get on that...was planning on doing later illl just do it now lol. anyone happen to know where the ignition wire is...i had some serious trouble finding it so right now it in the fuse box...only problem is when the fan cuts off the wire is getting hot and a little stream of smoke is coming up through my steering column which i guesss means it back feeding...i need to know asap lol. im very meticulous about my stuff so that smoke aint cuttin it and i was tempted to put the clutch fan back on. any help is appreciated.

You need to add a freewheeling diode across the positive/negative wiring. It works like a check valve, when power is cut to the motor it keeps spinning acting like a generator and sends power back through the relay and wiring. Put the silver band towards the + side...Radio Shack has the diodes part# 1N5408, they come in a pack of 3 for $5 or so

ill definitely look into to that but everything seems to be good guys. i had my iginition wire where the hot wire from the battery was. needless to say...that was my issue lol. luckily i found it in time before i fried my factory wiring. thanks for all the help and i plan on getting a under drive pulley and will prob pick of a diode tomorrow.

thanks again,
mike
