Really hard to say from here.... That's why I asked if you have any play. If you jack it up, pull the wheel (maybe get the brake pads outta the way, too) and spin it, you'll know if it's bad. Mine had a little play, but it just felt awful when spinning it. The timken I put on is like butter. I know the cheapie are known for failing fairly quickly.

Let me add another bit of info to this. the whine increased in volume, and tone (higher pitched) with engine speed. gear one at 3k and 15mph sounded the same as 45mph and 3k in 4th.

Lemme run down what I know, and how best to explain the sound.

It started a few weeks ago, barely inaudible, and felt like it was still the same noise it always made. Yesterday, driving around in the flood water, it suddenly became VERY pronounced. So much so I was afraid I was driving around with no fluid suddenly. Pull over to check the fluid, following the procedure to make sure the fluid is cycled (P->R->N->D->3->2->1->2->3->D->N->R->P) and the fluid level is on the money.

The noise most audible under acceleration, although the transmission didn't stutter or shake, or slip. The while is also audible when slowing down, as the tranny starts to down shift.

The noise is DEFINITELY not from the rear, it sounds like it was right under, or right in front of the driver's seat.

This morning, after it dried off, the noise is mostly gone, almost inaudible.

Though maybe some bearing somewhere was going out, or wasn't sealed well, since the noise was much worse after deep water, I've never pulled anything on the drive line. Service 4WD light comes on in information screen since november, but Truck will shift into 4hi and 4lo and back without difficulty (you can hear the actuator working) even though the lights on the control panel are out for both 4hi and 4 lo.

anyone noticed that whine before? sounded like I was driving the damn Delorean from Back to the Future.

Hey Bud, I hate to tell you this but I was experiencing the exact same thing back in February after driving on a pretty bad gravel road. My first thought was wheel hub or bearing. I drove it with the noise for about a week then the Tranny went out and it wouldn't shift out of 1st and had no reverse! 2 weeks later and out $2,500 I was back in the driver seat. But I guess $2,500 is better than having a monthly note... Good Luck.
