*edit* power steering whine and leak

Hey Bud, I hate to tell you this but I was experiencing the exact same thing back in February after driving on a pretty bad gravel road. My first thought was wheel hub or bearing. I drove it with the noise for about a week then the Tranny went out and it wouldn't shift out of 1st and had no reverse! 2 weeks later and out $2,500 I was back in the driver seat. But I guess $2,500 is better than having a monthly note... Good Luck.


I'm hoping it isn't something like this, although I have been known to have terrible luck. The Transmission has never even slipped a gear, hesitated, or shuddered. I'm hoping its some bearing or something that is exposed to the outside.

2 days in the dry, and the sound is non-existent again. So I'm thinking Hubs might be the culprit. Gonna have to check for play, and get under neath it.

Check on them sooner than later cause if that's it, when they go, they can get squirrelly real fast and you'll want a little time for your Timkens to arrive.

Yeah, I've been dealing with water in my downstairs for the torrential rains we've been getting. I'll have it in the air by Wednesday.

Solved. Not hubs, knew it had to be something on the engine because it changes pitch with engine speed, not wheel speed.

It was power steering pump. Wasn't empty, but had ran low enough to make noise. Don't know why the water started that problem, unless the leak let water in when I was driving through it. Time to check connections and gaskets.

felt a little sheepish when I realized what it was. When it started suddenly in the water, I just wasn't thinking it could be that, but yesterday as soon as I heard it i knew.

Added some fluid to it, took a little less than half a quart ( oops ) But seems good now. Cleaned the engine bay to see if I can track down the leak. Look like maybe the underside of the pump, or at the booster one. Both have some dirty dried fluid areas on them.

Well ; I have 1999 4x4 with 104,000 miles that had a power steering problem. Being 73 years Old I had mechanic in Cottonwood Arizona work on it. THAT WAS A MISTAKE FOR SURE !!! So I did it myself for me it was an all day job. The cost for the pump was around $250.00 with exchange it's really not that hard too do. Just keep the steering wheel aline and center and the must important thing is make sure you secure the pump to the frame. I just when't to YOUTUBE they have a bunch of stuff about it.

between youtube and TYF, I've learned how to do almost anything I could ever want to do. I'm hoping its not the whole pump, but we'll see.
