I put together a price list of everything I'll need to build a 383 stroker from an existing 350, estimating machine work (estimated 700 of machine work for bore, clearance, port and polish, valve seals and lapping) and I came up with less than 2k, and I know that I can assemble it. Sourced a **** rotating assembly, the same cam used in the HT383. The questions you'd have to ask are 1. Do you have the experience/time to build one yourself (I know I do) 2. Is the time you'd take to build it yourself work the extra cost?
3. Do you trust someone elses work over your own?

Wondering if anyone knows of a full parts list to go into a 4l60e to rebuild it and upgrade to a 4l65e capable of handling the torque of a 383? My new shell has a 4l60 with burnt clutches, and i'm trying to locate a resource with all of the updated parts, the new 5 pinion rear carrier (or is it the front?) and any other 4l65e parts that i'd need.

Check out PATC transmissions online. Don't think they have the full list but have a good description of the upgraded parts that go in their trannys.

Got an email in to patc but I think I have the parts list for the 4l65e rebuild/upgrade. Not sure if I should go with the stock converter or not though. What would you guys recommend for the ht383e?

Don't know anyone personally with the 383. Supposedly swap intake and accesories and good to go. 9.1:1 compression means you could put 5-7lbs of boost on later if you get bored. Looks like $4500-5000 depending on where you get it from.

I know Bowtiefreak has the 383 in his Tahoe.

For those running the 383 stroker. How is the rest of the drive line holding up. I've been considering this option. I replaced the tranny 2 yrs ago with a level 2 from PATC. So far so good with the stock 350. I'm worried about blowing the transmission and rear end with the increased torque of the 383 stroker. My rig is a 98 2 door with 255k on the clock. 350 is getting pretty tired... For 2k I can get a new GM 350 from Jegs. I saw a guy on ebay selling new/rebuilt strokers out of Houston for 3K. The stroker looks tempting... 4K to 5K for the new HT383 is out of my price range.

I blew the original engine in my '96 Tahoe last year, ordered the GM Crate 350 from Jegs and the Pacesetter shorty headers to go with it. Noticeable difference from the tired 213K 350 I had in it before, but otherwise... meh.
Pretty much a standard replacement, and no real noticeable gains in power, even with the headers and a BB tune for rear O2 delete and cold air intake. Hell, I'm still getting the same lousy 13.5mpg I was getting before the engine went.

I didn't have the extra $1500 at the time, else I would have gone with the 383.

I have the HT383 and there is a noticeable difference all around. Although I think getting one from a builder would be cheaper and maybe able to put better parts in for the same price. Also the 383 suffers from piston slap noise. Bothers the shit out of me. I even called chevy and filed a claim just in case it should cause issues in the future. The guy acknowledged the piston slap as a know issue and said that no damage is being caused by it

Also, I had a PACT 4l60e Level 3 tranny and after 2 years of daily driving it literally exploded internally. I dropped the pan and all kinds of shredded metal was in there. I now have a stocker I bought off Craigslist cause i'm done with the 4l60. If you can manage it I would go for the 4l80e.

jebus, the amount of money you guys are talking about spending on a legacy 350 is retarded.

A 5.3 swap with full bolt on's wont cost half of what your talking about spending.
It will get double the MPG, make Alot more HP/TQ and be FAR more reliable.

I put the prices together for the HT383 vs building one myself and I gotta say that the HT383 is WAY overpriced. The only plus side is the 4 bolt main, and at under 350hp i don't see the 2 bolt being an issue. I plan on using the following kit, and having a local machine shop do the bore, clearancing, and reworking the heads which should be around 500ish. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/esp-b13405l03068/overview/

Stock 5.3 (ARP head and rod studs) with On3 Turbo kit. instant 500+ Hp/Tq @ 10psi. Well under your budget for other goodies (4L80) and cheap as hell to replace engine when it blows if it ever does.

4.8 pullout, 250$, easy to find, 15hp less than 5.3.
5.3 pullout 450$ even simpler to find, 25hp less than 6.0
6.0 pullout 600-1k$, hard to find.

On3 kit, complete with FP, injectors, boost controller and boost guage, 2500$ (on the high side $) Base kit is 1900$.

Well with in budget.
