Hello Gents.

My 2002 Yukon slt Xl, You know the one with the BIG engine, dies on occation while driving along. Most of the time it starts right up again. Sometimes it wont start unless I lock and unlock the doors with the remote door opener. There is no pattern to this problem at all, anytime anywhere.
It does not happen very often, maybe 2-3 times a month.

Any clues anyone?

welcome to the site.

Does it have any codes after this happens? If you have to lock/unloack, sounds like an alarm issue? Does it have an aftermarket alarm?

My buddy who has an 04 ran his fuel tank dry and sucked up a bunch of crap from his tank. His problems were identicle to yours with the exception of the door lock thing. It's possible that's just coincedence.

possibly a problem with the microchip in the key/immobilizer? Might be a clogged fuel filter..

Just went through this with my new 2 me '02 yukon xl w/8.1L.
I had two issues with it when i bought it and one was dieing. Maybe 4 times in two weeks. Also missing when going up a hill. First they replaced the crackshaft positioning sensor. Didn't die in the 4 days i drove it but still missing so put it back in the shop. Simple spark plug replacement for this and didn't miss on a test drive. Bottom line is he said he feels the crankshaft postioning sensor was the cause of the dieing issue so maybe start with that. And it did have a code stored for this.

Thanks..

I disconnected the battery and everything seemed to fine...for awhile. It took a long time before it did it again. Once again I disconnected and it seems to be fine. I suspect problems with the remote keythingie. One day the remote acted up weirdely..then...again....diconnect the battery and it's all fine again....weird huh?
Impossible to be clogged fuelfilter by the way...I drive on propan gas. 104 octan..pretty cool and cheap too.

A short recap.

The resetting of the battery worked for some time, then it started all over again, or should I say stopped all over again?. I had no chance in getting the codes checked as the system resets it self after a few start ups.

After searching the net, talking to people and using my superior judgement, I decided the the sinner in question must be the cranck position sensor. I had it changed at my local gm shop. Would You belive they charged me 1000 usd for a change? Not to mention the 400 usd for two new remote door opener.

Well, problem solved...car runs as normal and all is well. A little less well off but all in all I'm glad the thing runs normal.

Enjoy,

G
