Engine oil change Nightmare - 2003 Tahoe Z71

Hello all,

Well, this is indeed the longest in my 20 years of changing the oil in my own cars has taken. I started this on Saturday morning and thought what would be a simple 30 minute job or less turned into several days.

I am now down to the upper edge of the filter (whats left of it) and it still is not budging. I am going to try and fabricate a 1 inch socket to go into the canal holes of the POS filter and take it off that way.

My question is this: Does the shaft that comes down with the allen head turn at all? I do not want to try anything on that in fear of doing any damage to the truck. All I care about is getting this POS off. This is why I never let the idiots at the dealer or Walmart touch my cars. I am happy to say that nothing happend to the oil pan during this mess. The name of that filter was (Hfilter). Funny, never heard of the POS and I could not find anything on it anywhere.

Has anyone else ran into this problem??

lol, that almost happened to me when i changed it on a 2000 navigator , how did it tear apart? how i did it was with a leather belt, did you put a screwdriver through it and turn it? lol

I started out with the regular oil filter strap tool, that of course just buckled it then I did the screwdriver method < it turned a little but not much> After doing that several times, I just chisled it away to get to the upper portion. Yes, I am doing it counter-clockwise so it is being turned the right way.

I had the same similar situation when I bought my 1995 Honda Passport in 2000. Now, everytime I change the oil, I am always able to get that one off by hand. I change my oil every 1500 miles. Rediculous? No, I take very good care of my vehicles and that is why I dont care about the cost of maintanance. At least I never see the Check Engine light come on.

Of course, my 1991 Exploder had almost 400,000 miles on it when I sold it and it still was running fine.

Hopefully I can get this tackled tomorrow.

i worked at jiffy lube before, we had a tool to get that off with ease...or it cold've been my boss's personal tool
i think it was a snap-on

Ooooohhhhh......Some exact thing happened to once. It took me like 2hrs to get it off. What I ended up doing is taking a chisel and wedging it in the little holed then banging it with a hammer until it broke loose. I nudged it mm by mm until it was loose enough then I opened up a large pair of needle nose and turned it with those......it sucks... I thought I was never going to get it off......

FINALLY! This evil spawn of a oil filter is now OFF! Now my (woman) is free from this disease. It took my friend 25 minutes with a high pressure air ratchet to remove the POS. Here is what is left of the stupid thing. Needless to say, he had to take a photo with his cameraphone to share with everyone else.

Good riddance to that cancerous thing. What he do to take it off? You make that custom socket you were talking about?
