The only thing i can figure is that there is a differance betwwn the tahoe and esky base which would allow the metal base to fit tighter to the body.

Scratch that. There must be a deifference between the metal internal bases. It seems that when you replace the entire mirror assembly it sis flush except for the small hole on the lower right where the esky trim would go. I just find it hard to believe GM would do that but apparently they did.
Ah I see what you're saying now. When I had my 08 Tahoe I put esky mirrors on them and they did sit flush but had that annoying gap for the esky window sill.
