I just realized they’re only rated to tow 3k lbs, because they’re made to be outfitted with equipment, but sure the truck is capable of more than that?

GM built so few, they didn't bother paying for the SAE towing test/certification. So the tow rating defaults to 3000 lbs for that vehicle class.

But, given the equipment it has, IMHO it would have been given a tow rating in the range of 13k to 15k lbs. It has an 11,000 GVWR (vs 8600 for the 2500s), 4000+ lb payload rating (vs 2000+), 4.10 gearing (vs 3.73), 6.0, 6L90, and the 11.5" (vs 10.5) rear end.

Look at Geotrash's avatar. That's more than 3,000 lbs. ;)

Hypothetically though, if you were pulling an 8k trailer and got in an accident, couldn’t your insurance say “well, you overloaded it, and we won’t pay anything?”

Well, first of all, how, exactly, would they know? Weigh all the debris? I've been towing and hanging out on RV boards for over 20 years, and have never once seen, read, nor heard of a situation where that happened. Does the insurance company pay if you cause an accident while speeding?

It has the same frame as the 2014 suburban 2500. But it has the running gear and brakes of a 1-ton SRW pickup.

Just towed our 7500 pound camper to Mill Spring, North Carolina this afternoon. So much more stable, secure and enjoyable than our 1500’s for towing. It was 96° outside and we had 5 people and a large dog in the Suburban, and the transmission never got above 195° and the coolant needle never budged, even up over the hills.

For those of us who have searched the interwebs for the vehicle of choice on the nationwide setting, the perks and rewards of getting exactly the vehicle you wanted are priceless.

I’m typing this as I pushed the button for the refrigerated seats in today’s 80% humidity. Did a drive from TX to CA to get this 09 Esky @140k in ‘20.

Dogs & Kids in an XL outfitted w/ GM’s dual a/c makes the journey & the destination a double win.
