The aftermarket warranty better described as service contracts are great until they reach the threshold of paying out more than you put in. Make sense as they need to stay in business.
Get the true GM protection plan if at all possible. The dealer will treat you better and won’t have to deal with the approval process like a service contract (S/C) requires.
My last dealer experience over an alternator was Jekyll & Hyde compared to the 1st visit on the S/C for almost $3k in covered repairs. The service writer felt inclined to demand 110% on dealer parts and pad my bill with an extra hour of labor. All that because he wanted to meet his quota vs. get the job done for 95% of his asking
He pissed the S/C warr admin off by overcharging them, they countered by screwing me with a 1/2 cost reimbursement for the job, mailing a Chinese made, reman alt from back East.
Only once I had a heart to heart with the S/C admin did we realize the dealer service writer was the problem. Once I apologised for his behaviour and kicked him off the R/O, did the S/C admin pay out $650 for an hour of labor and a NEW GM alternator. I’m still waiting for a call from the owner about the service writer’s behaviour and the F bomb he caused.
