Hello-
I have a 98 Yukon with the Fabtech 6 inch lift, and 4wd. I think I am in serious need of a steering dampener with my 35 inch tires. I have looked at a couple kits but it is hard to tell which ones are direct bolt up kits. The Fabtech dampener looks good but seems to be a little pricing. Any real world experience with these or recommendations? I don't want to break the bank on this part, just get something serviceable, I rarely off road. Thanks in advance.

I'll start by asking why you think you need this. If you say sloppy steering this is not the answer. I have run with and without them and in all honestly I barely noticed the difference

I have a bad shimmy in the steering wheel. I have checked over the front end, everything looks good, no loose parts. The steering box looks original so I am sure it is getting worn out. There are no steering issues when driving down the highway, no wandering or shimmy, just at lower speeds over bumps.

I had death wobble in my Jeep before, but it was at high speeds. This seems to be at lower speeds and I experience nothing on the highway. I just got done reading about the rag joint, could be my problem. I grabbed the steer shaft and twisted it back and forth, there is definitely play there. Is the rag joint right on top of the steering box? I did not see it when i was checking this morning.

The rag joint is on the steering shaft itself. There should be a universal joint on one side and the rag joking is that funky looking thing on the other. I know a company makes a replacement billet aluminum u-joint that replaces the rag joint for a little elbow grease and about $70.

Which company makes the replacement joint? The rag joint looks like a bad idea.

I recommend on any lifted or lower set-up a steering stabilizer. I am lowered and I am glad I got a single shock one from Sky-Jacker. If I had the choice all over again, I would get the dual shock stabilizer.

I am not sure if this will solve your problems b/c we have two different set-ups. Just a recommendation.

GL!

Thanks for the recommendations. I checked the rag joint this morning, it honestly looks tight, no wear. The steering shaft looks pretty clean so I am guessing this has been replaced recently. I am going to try a stabilizer to help with the wobble. If that doesn't work I will just start replacing older parts in the suspension. Does anyone know of a complete poly urethane bushing kit for the front end or do I need to buy them in pieces? I looked around this morning and did not find one. I jacked up the front end and tried jiggling the tires around to see if maybe the joints were loose or the tie rods were bad but I am just not finding anything.
