Have any members used the heatgun method? I'd like to know how it worked both short and long-term.

I just removed one of my running boards and tried the heatgun method. It didn't work on the raised pattern, the area where the raised ovals meet the surface were untouched by the heat and it was leaving white rings around them.

Yeah I stopped just before I melted the damn things! The white rings were still there after it cooled down. I ended up painting them and then the rear bumper covers too with Krylon Fusion satin black. Came out nice, and I heard it wears well.

Did you guys remove the rear bumper pads to paint or did you just tape off?

I removed all the parts and cleaned them with mineral spirits ( that's what Krylon specifies in the instructions.) The rear bumper main cover is removed by removing the 2 push-in clips that are underneath and then pulling straight back starting from one side. You might have to pry a bit where the clips are with a long thin pry bar. It just has the regular tabs with the spring clips on them. The running board covers and top bumper cover just pull straight up, pry at each clip. Very easy.
Edit: those instructions are for the Denali lower bumper cover.
