Few questions about stock rear DVD.

So my OBS has finally kicked and I'm gonna pull the trigger on an 03-06 Tahoe/Yukon but have a question on the rear entertainment.

I'm going to upgrade the sound system as I usually do and understand what has to be done to get all the OEM controls to function with the aftermarket deck.

Is the rear DVD system a totally separate entity from the main system?

Does the rear DVD play through the truck speakers or just headphones?

I've been reading about what's needed to make a new head unit work but no one ever mentions what's needed to tie in the rear system.

The RSE ( rear system entertainment ) is not standalone. The audio is played via the cars speakers or the headphines, depend how you use it. Workout the haunt controlling it, it will act as a standalone system.

There is a specific harness that retaims steering when controls for everything i.e. RSE XM PHONE CD .

After seeing how many various wiring harnesses I would've needed to keep my DVD, steering wheel controls, door chimes, and OnStar I quickly decided to keep the stock headunit (and get a bluetooth module for it). There's also hardly any room behind the stereo so that's a giant pain in the ass... And I have no idea how you would access the RSE through an aftermarket HU.

I'm really after the navigation so maybe I'm better off getting an oem nav unit and going from there.

There is a thread that talks about the adding the stock nav head unit to cars that diidnt have it and it is pretty simple. If your looking on going after market, there is an adapter to retain everything, i think its the gmos 4 adapter. What options are availble in your truck currently?

From what I have learned all you'll need to make the RSE play through an aftermarket deck is that the deck has an audio input, and the appropriate adapter.. The RSE control unit houses the headphones transmitter, and would still work with the headphones. The audio controls on the RSE unit will not control an aftermarket deck. If you decide to go with an OEM Nav unit make sure it's not from an LUX Bose vehicle. The LUX, and standard amps are completely different, and the two are not interchangeable. You could add the LUX amp to your truck, but you'll have to rewire part of the harness to the speakers, and between the HU and the amp.

I just upgraded my headunit and used the gmos 04 adapter to keep the onstar and door chimes. The RSE doesn't play through the head unit anymore but it still works with the headphones. It's a trade off but my head unit does have bluetooth so I can play a movie on the android tablet and it goes through the speakers just fine.

You can keep RSE to your head unit with the correct harness and options.

NOTE – RSE requires that the OE radio was the source of activation. If a activation somewhere else like the rear controls the RSE will not work as of yet.




So if you could hit source on your radio and scroll to RSE, you can keep RSE with this harness
