Hey all, long time lurker, first time poster. Just wanted to introduce myself and ask a quick question or two.
My truck is a 1997 4D 4WD Tahoe. I bought it about 2 years ago from a family friend for $500. They had just bought a Yukon Denali that had about 15,000 miles on it and took pity on me and my lack of transportation and gave me the truck on the cheap. At the time it had about 210,000 miles on it and it now has just over 241,000 miles. It runs pretty damn well for an old vehicle, but that's not to say that I haven't sunk some serious cash into her. The previous owner rebuilt the transmission at 183,000 miles and I've had to replace the starter, the water pump, and the radiator.
About a week ago I had to get new upper and lower ball joints on the RF side. In addition, my mechanic said this was likely because my shocks looked like they were original. So, I had him replace the ball joints and my dad and I replaced the front shocks. Wow....14 years of being exposed to the elements can really make for a fun time loosening nuts! I ordered the rear shocks off of Amazon and am now just waiting for a day that's warm and I have off of school and work.
Now, my question for you folks is concerning changing the transmission fluid and filter. Since my transmission going would effectively total my truck, I want to make sure to take good care of it. Especially so since it only has 60,000 miles since being rebuilt. Anywho, I was just looking at the owner's manual and it says that unless you use your truck under any severe conditions, you don't need to change the fluid and filter. What's your take on that. Even if I don't use my truck under any of the severe questions, will changing the fluid and the filter add any life to my transmission?
