The proving grounds is in milford michigan, hes been there for about 22 years so I trust that he knows what hes doing. I will test the purple wire first and see what happens. I did notice that when I turn the key to the on position there is a clicking sound kinda like a relay and that is when it bounces. Could it be something to do with that. Maybecthe guy I got it from wired something wrong and taped into that wire to power something?

only relay that should click is the fuel pump relay so if the gauge bounce then you might have a high resistance crossed wire somewhere between the pump and sender or corrosion in the electric connector.
I was looking around under the dash yesterday and found a metal box under the dash about 4" by 4" big and thats whats clicking. The guage jumps with the clicks. Its 2 quick clicks, the first click jumps all the way past full and the second it jumps back past empty then sits there. What is that box for?

if left side of steering column then that would be the transfer case control module it sounds like. is that what you here or is it somewhere else under the dash?
