What should the fuel pressure be for a 2006 6.0? If I can believe my Chinese pressure gage I have 50psi when the pump is running and 40psi once the pump is off. It holds at 40psi. The engine is hard starting and will run for a second or 2 and as long as 20 seconds and then stops. I have no idea how old the fuel pump is. 255k miles on this one.

Fuel Pressure, and does the pump run are two different things. I would get about 100K per pump in the 01 1500. Pressure means you start easily, but if the pump is getting old, and decides to stop pumping, you can stall. I would do the pump for sure at 255K - it may solve other crimes as well. It's not a fun job to do the correct way. When my 01 got to 250K, and the pump died, I went the route of cutting the floor above the tank, and pulling it. I did do the tank drop in the past, but at the end I was too fed up. The 'new' 02 2500 has both pumps new, and I did not have to do it : )

What is the pressure at idle? How about 2k Rpm's?
Doesn't run long enough to check. Mostly it run for about a second. It's not the pass lock because it did run for 20 seconds but I didn't have the gauge on it.

I picked up a new AC Delco fuel pump from Rockauto.com. I'll be farming this job out. I'm guessing there's about 8-10 gallons of fuel in there. I replaced one in my Safari van years ago and that wasn't very fun. From what I can find on the Google machine it should be 60+ psi with the pump on and 50 psi sitting.

Might be good to consult service data before throwing parts at it. Haynes (not the best, but...):

For fuel pressure, according to Haynes:
KOEO (key on, engine off)
Flex Fuel: 48-54 psi
Non-Flex: 55-62 psi
Easy enough to test without running the engine.

If the pressure is in spec, turn the key off and see if it holds somewhat steady or drops like a rock.

So today I tried the truck, it started hard but kept running this time. So I decided to check my work. This time with the key on 45psi instead of 40psi and 55 psi at Idle. Still going the replaced the pump, for peace of mind. Thank Fless, I can confirm those are good numbers.
