Genuine Tech2 quick question

The software is current, and from my perspective, there is no appreciable difference between a genuine GM Tech 2 and a clone Tech 2. I've had no issues with my clone Tech 2. Most important, I've saved thousands of dollars in diagnostics and repairs with my Tech 2.

AGREE 100% about this group! Before I asked if you all would allow an Avalanche guy on here, I was frequenting numerous other forums and simply stated: This one, BY A WIDE MARGIN, had the most knowledgeable members, had the least negativity, least sarcasm, and fewest ego driven posters....definitely a good group to be in community with...
If I hadn't been on here, I doubt I would've discovered that the 14bolt 9.5" even existed? and most likely would still not know whats on the other side of a rear diff cover!



Haven't thought about Star Lake in years.. That place was rockin when I was at WVU, and only like 45min drive. In mid 90's I saw Buffet, Greatful Dead, Black Crowes, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Dave Mathews Band, Wu-Tang Clan, Rage Against the Machine, Filter, Clutch, Cypress Hill and at least a dozen more I cant remember there.
Had one of the best A-HA moments of my young adutlhood there- it was the week before Rage Against the Machine, smaller band(??), and a small mosh pit broke out. maybe 10-12 dudes. 1/100th of what was gonna be in 7 days. I was 20 or 21, and had come a long way from the stick figure kid who got stampeded the 1st time he got knocked down in his very 1st mosh pit at the Ona Volunteer Fire Dept , to the 6'1 210lb seasoned veteran that had banged his way through half a dozen metal and grunge concerts, Lolapalooza, and Woodstock '94 since. Along the way I had learned that footing was critical to survival and vital if you wanted to excel! Those guys were struggling to stay upright on that beer soaked hillside. So I decided to wear my cleats to the Rage concert....and I would like to officially apologize to anyone that might've been there, in that pit, and somehow gets a ripple of this post lol. It was a lot like when Ms. Lippey made Billy Madison go outside and play dodgeball with the kindergartners

Thanks Joe....was hoping you would weigh in. I know you have a lot of experience with them. Honestly, I was a little more concerned when the guy said it was a genuine unit and that it had come from a local dealer.. Concerned it may be locked or would/could be locked if a subscription was not kept up on it? and Concerned it may have been stolen etc..

No, not yet...

I didn't call him that first day because I wasn't comfortable with my lack of knowledge re: potential risks, costs or subscriptions with a genuine unit. Called him last night about 10 and he was in central Indiana for work....smh We talked for 30min though. He thinks he'll be home tomorrow Fri at latest... We'll see. Said he has two units...

Not sure what to offer him? has listed for $200 obo Only has Tech2 and CANdi with OBDII adapter, no power cords or case or serial port cords or anything else that comes in bundle for $206 as a clone. $200 minus cost of AC charger $20? AC and DC $40? Minus all accessories would be $110

for me 200$ clone became 300 with shipping my the time you pay for it.

while I have used the 110v to 12v plug a few times, since my obd port is key switched. but still not often. rest of the stuff I've never even opened the package for it.

if I plugged it into my truck and it worked, looks in good shape. personally I've give him 200$ for it.

but I'm not really that picky about money. trying to low ball someone a 100$ isn't going to change how I'm living. you can't easily for lost in the whole over thinking of it all trying to save what dinner out cost these days.

The power supply inside the unit is inferior.

I ALWAYS use the cig adapter on my clone. It was like powering the Candi module was just too much for it to handle. Now I know why!

Im still happy with it. Probably paid around $350 couple years ago.

The flat (ribbon) cable with the RJ45 connectors can be replaced by a standard Cat5e network cable.

For diagnostic work, you do not need to hook up the Tech 2 to a 12 volt source. It will pull the 12 volts that it needs from the OBDII jack on the truck which it plugs into to operate. If you want to do programming with the Tech 2, then you you should connect it to a 12 volt source, but that is an increasingly rare procedure with the Tech 2.

My Tech 2 came with it own box and all of the various connectors. The reality is that I ONLY use the Tech 2, the CANDI module, the cord that connects the Tech 2 to the CANDI module, the OBDII plug, and the cord that connects the CANDI module to the OBDII plug.

Plug it in and make sure it works, if it does and give him the $200, you can use any standard 12v dc adapter whenever the need should arise that's no big deal at all, you probably have one that will work for it already laying around the house
