I live in cold weather for the winter up here in the mountains. I didn't add the cold weather bypass and I didn't have any issues without it. But then again my cold is not cold like some places. Lol.
The bypass is meant to keep the fluid warm since it bypasses the cooler whentemps are freezing. It helps the trans since then the fluid just goes through the radiator where it gets warmed. If the cooler is operating then the fluid stays too cool for what the trans likes so although it isn't an issue it's not best for the trans. ( once the weather gets warm the fluid is hot enough coming from the trans that the radiator actually cools it a bit). Too cool isn't good as well as too hot.

Holy crap what a bunch of shit trying to get any tech info from TruCool. I've been emailing them because I like a paper trail and so far they sent me to an area sales rep who then tried to send me to a distributor. WTF? For tech questions? Their product is great but I don't understand their brand of tech service. Just for laughs, here's the text from my latest email I just sent them. Enjoy.

"I'd like to talk to someone from tech support. I don't know how to do that though. Your answer is the exact same language used on the Tru-Cool website HOWEVER if you look, there is also information that states:





"With their unique design, Tru-Cool transmission and engine coolers help keep the vehicles you rely on running cool, and that can save you major repair costs.

Here’s how it works:

  • Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is more viscous when it’s colder. Tru-Cool transmission and engine coolers enable that colder, thicker ATF to flow more efficiently through the two open bypass channels at the top of the system.
  • As operating temperatures increase, the ATF heats up and becomes thinner. The Tru-Cool system then directs the ATF through the core where it is cooled.
  • You get optimal heat transfer and improved protection against lube system failure"


If you look at the diagram, there's definitely a different look to the first 2 channels compared to the others. And the diagram shows the fittings on the TOP. If I was to turn the cooler so the fittings are on the BOTTOM, those 2 open channels are now on the bottom so it looks like the ATF will only flow through those 2 channels which are now on the bottom and since they're "open channels" the rest of the cooler won't even be used and in fact will be filled with air. So there lies the root of our question. I don't know why I've been directed to you, a sales rep, or why you would direct me to ask a distributor. Doesn't your company have any kind of technical support? I've never dealt with a company with so vague answers and nobody to explain technical issues with their products. The forum world is getting all worked up over this, and with good reason. Your company doesn't look like they know what they're talking about. Please point to me to somebody with an understanding of your products."

Ok now I've tried that and they don't reply. Besides, shouldn't the company that makes a product be the one that answers a technical question about said product, not a distributor? I've gotten a lot of run around on this question from TruCool as well as others on a forum I'm on and Im afraid you might be losing customers just because your company can't answer a simple question. One member called and was treated like it was too much to ask , like the person on the phone couldn't be bothered with answering it. Another was treated plain rude. There's a lot of talk going on right now regarding your technical service. You guys don't seem to know anything about your products. I believe it would be in your best interest to either get an answer to my question or forward if to someone who can. Or be the subject of more scrutiny by thousands on the forums.

I need to know if the TruCool Max 40K transmission cooler (LPD4739) is better installed with the input/output on the top or bottom or does it matter. My factory oil cooler, which I'm replacing, has fittings on the bottom but I've heard it's better to mount the TruCool with the fittings on the top. Thank you.

I couldn't of said it better myself.Im wondering if they just mean different fitting's 90 degree or anything you want to put in at any angle.I just want to know if its more beneficial for the cooler to be mounted with them in the top position like the diagram states.Because of the 2 passages up their should be on the top and then drain down when warm.They cannot answer that one and send me to some engineer who has not responded back to me in 3 days.They would be awfully pissed if everyone on here called them tomorrow and asked the same thing.:) I wanted to get one for my other ride it needs it more.

Where are the cold weather bypass tubes? All I see is a basic stacked plate cooler. Top and bottom plates look normal. Marketing at its finest...

Supposedly the first two rows flow when the fluid is cold, then as the fluid warms up it will flow through the rest. That was my understanding when I bought it for my trailblazer. It may be a bit of voodoo wizardry marketing though.

Couple of more points I just wanted to add (as someone who bought my GMT800 - 04 Suburban 1500 - specifically to tow a small trailer):

1. As others have said, the 1500 'Burb/Tahoe and non-Denali Yukon did not come from the factory with a transmission temp gauge. I'm ASSUMING that the rare 06 LTZ version (that had the 6.0 V8) did come with one, since the Denali, Escalade, and 2500 models - all with 6.0 or 8.1 V8s - came with the trans temp gauge. As I understand it, the trans temp gauge is linked to whatever engine the vehicle came with: 4.8 or 5.3, no trans temp gauge, 6.0 or up (this includes all Escalades, Denalis and all 2500 vehicles) had the temp gauge.

The good news is that the sensor is already there so if you just add an instrument cluster with the gauge, it will work. My instrument cluster went out last year and I had it rebuilt by the folks at Circuit Board Medics with all new stepper motors and green LEDs, and for an extra $100 they added a trans temp gauge (far left in this picture.)

2. I believe the tow package also included the 145a alternator. I would definitely recommend upgrading the alternator if you haven't already. It's an easy job and well worth the extra power. I'm running two batteries and powering a refrigerator in my truck so I need all the power I can get!

So i got a call from the engineer i left a message with monday he was on vaca and yes it is his cell phone-he has 2 other jobs besides the one with true cool ok.So the cooler you guys have is the max it does not have the 2 open bypass channels at the top of the cooler,i guess that is the lpd model.I asked about it mounted upside down and the air that would be trapped in the cooler when shut off and drained down.He said their cant be any air its a sealed system-i laughed and said really how can i check the trans fluid if its sealed.He paused for a second and said well it might not be sealed and poss could have some air in it.I then asked about the cold weather bypass and its a thermostat that opens slightly at 180 degrees and is fully open at 205 i hope its open by 205 thats hot.Well i got some answers at least by their only engineer that has 2 other jobs besides working for the Dana corp or true cool.I dont think i would install this with the cold weather valve without a trans temp guage-how else would you know if the t stat sticks closed-your trans would be toast in minutes.I think im going to stick with stock its been in their for 76k and the trans fluid is perfect so it must do something right-im sure not enough like the bigger one but im towing under 3500 lbs im good. I installed that cold weather bypass and I understood it fully opens at 180. My trans never gets over that unless It's extremely hot outside. I bought the 30K Trucool Max and it definitely helps, it dropped my temps by about 20 degrees over the stock. I need all the help I can get with my 4L60E trans and my blower. I'm ******* that little tranny.

Ah, I get how the cooler works with the thermostat bypass. Neat idea. I've seen Dodge use that on some of their trucks; definitely a hit or a miss depending on the climate the owner is in.

I'd have some faith that Tru Cool made a failsafe so that when it sticks, it sticks fully open.

Thank you for the first hand knowledge you said it drops it 20 degrees that is a big improvement over stock.Thats what i wanted was someone that had it done already with a trans temp guage.Its interesting that yours doesn't get over 180 if what he said is correct about the valve not opening till 180 slightly and fully open at 205-it must open before that or right at that maybe he is off a little.If it didnt open till 180 you wouldnt even be using a cooler then if it were shut tight.
