Going to have the trans serviced and possibly the rear diff fluid changed; questions!

My Tahoe has 152k miles. Looking at records I believe the Tahoe had the trans serviced at 95k miles at a GM dealership. The receipt is hard to read so I don't know what they did exactly and this is before I owned the Tahoe.

When I take my Tahoe to the local trans shop what should I tell them regarding the service? I do want them to drop the pan and install a new filter.

I believe looking at records the rear diff was serviced at 95k miles also. I'm not 100% sure though that's why I feel I should have the fluid changed. My Tahoe is a 2001 so it has the drain and fill holes on the rear diff. Is it necessary to remove the cover or can I just drain and re-fill? What's the going rate for a shop to do this?

Again, Tahoe is running fine *knocks on wood*, but want to have some preventable maintenance done.

If you want them to drop the pan and put in new fluid i'd just tell them that. As far as rear end fluid, that is so simple to change i would just do it myself. You dont have to take the cover off. Just undo the top bolt first so you know you can fill it after you drop the gear oil out the bottom. I use a pump to do the fluid transfer. It shouldnt take more than 20 mins do it when the oil is warm so it drains faster.

Keith, easy jobs to do yourself if mechanically inclined. It can be intimidating if your not handy with a wrench though. If you can change your oil, you can do these things. I have an 02 and just changed my trans fluid, filter, and flush (check out the write-up in the tech section) i had never done it before. I also changed fluid in both front and rear differentials. You can squirt rear diff fluid in straight out of the bottle. The front on the other hand needs to be put in with a pump ($10 quart bottle pump at autozone). I also changed my transfer case fluid. Take your time with it if you decide to do it yourself and good luck.

When you have a shop change the trans fluid they usually just drop the pan, change the filter and refill it. That doesn`t replace all the fluid.

With that in mind i changed my fluid using the method that VOLZ1207 mentioned

The only hard part is removing the transmission shift linkage to drop the pan.

I couldn`t remove it due to GM`s fantastic idea to use torx bolts so i just bent it out of the way.

KMan,
If you get me the VIN I can tell you any warranty work and possibly any service work that was done at a dealership... I dont know if you have the answers you were looking for but its always interesting seeing what the original owner had it at the dealership for...
