When I moved to Oregon 25+ years ago it was because I had been here before and liked the weather way better than in KC, Mo. The place was not near as crazy as it is now. At 68 years old, I don't really want to move again but I will if it gets crazy enough. I want to stay working in the self storage industry and live where is not so crazy, not so unsafe at times and the weather agrees with me.

funny i found Kc on both sides of that dirt water river to be shitholes to umpteenth power and that was a good 20 years ago i think at this point.

mid west aint to bad, if you dont mind driving over a 100 miles to get anywhere. last i was out there was before gps, so i was using old school maps. i stop to ask a guy for a road im looking for, he says its a piece down the road. over a hr of driving, i stop again, ask two ladys, they tell me the same thing lol im like just how far is a piece? cause i was told that a hr ago. turns out its like a 2 hr drive by their standards, never pass up a gas station when in the middle of nowhere either. you never know when you'll pass another one.

I have to agree with @Rocket Man about Oregon. If you want to get away to whatever scenery or landscape you want, it is an hour away. The desert area gets hotter if that is what you want or can be low humidity and 75 degrees here in Eugene and drive to the coast and will likely need a jacket. I like to go see lighthouses and there are gobs of them up and down the coast. If you want to see snow in the summer, you can, if you drive high enough. No, not the smoke high, I am talking elevation. Beautiful state but some crazies out here.

Portland and Eugene and a few smaller areas are homeless dream camps. Big drawback.

Any place where there is lots of population can be a ********. I lived north of the river in a suburb called Gladstone. I was less crowded but houses were stacked tight in some areas. If I was to ever go back and live there it would be away from KC and would be where I graduated high school at, in a small farming community, at the time, called Excelsior Springs, Mo. Lazy times there.

You were in Jersey? Which part?
It was actually Virginia, pretty close. Way back when I was younger. My brother was in the Army stationed in Viet Nam ( yeah it was awhile ago lol) and his wife was on ****** and mistreating his kids so my family packed up and drove over there to see. Back then, most cars didn’t have AC and we didn’t ever need it here but when we got there my mom called my dad back home and next thing you know the station wagon (yep) was at the dealer having AC installed. I remember it was kind of funky- the ducts were mounted under there dash. But there was no way we were going to survive without AC in the car even if it was only for a week or two. I remember that misery well. And the giant bugs. At least I think those were in Virginia too...long time ago.

ive never owned a car with out ac. if i bought a used car when i was a kid and it was broken, getting that ac working was job one.

first time i heard of cars not having ac intentionally was the northern states on the Canadian boarder. thought to my self, that makes sense.

of course back then ac was an option that you paid dearly to have installed with a new car. kinda like the standard am radios, i'll need that fm upgrade please lol

First things I noticed here in Oregon, when I got here and was looking to buy a house, was hardly any homes had a basement and the same for a/c. Weather here is just mild. No tornadoes so hardly any basements and if there are basements, they are finished off like man caves or rec rooms. Most homes just have a crawl space. Window a/c units are all over the place.

Rain is just an accepted occurrence and snow on the valley floor is a rarity. We get some hell crazy wind storms though. In the 25+ years I have been here I have only felt an earthquake rumble one time and was very mild.

What's the tax burden like in Oregon? I lived in California before coming to Texas, and coming to Texas was like a 12% raise (IIRC) when I made the move.

There is no sales tax here but the property taxes are way up there and the state tries each month/year to push thru new tax initiatives. My cousin Beverly lived thru the Paradise, Ca. fire and is now, after living in Paradise for 50+ years, is planning on selling her home and rental property land and moving to be close to one of her sons in Warrensburg, Mo. Her rental property home was burned to the ground and her home had exterior fire damage. Lots of building there but several people that want to stay there but not wait for a home to be built are making high bids on her home to entice her to sell.

I’m sure the OP is on the level, or he wouldn’t be on here asking for advice.

That said, the impression made by not wanting to file a claim and ask for cash... not a positive one.

I’d have been on the phone to the other guy’s insurance before I left the scene.

Not sure, I never compared it to other places. It matters what county you live in, if you’re in the Portland city limits etc. We have no sales tax so they make it up in property taxes. It’s like comparing apples to oranges.
