Grinding noise when turning steering wheel

This is my first post and want to start by thanking everyone for the help. I looked through the fourms and couldn't find anything on this. When you turn the steering wheel on my 97 2-door tahoe it makes a grinding noise, sometimes its not that bad and other times it seams worse. Its coming from right behind the steering wheel. It turns easy and steers fine but its just bothersome. It sounds like its plastic rubbing together. Hope u guys can help, thanks.

How far down in the column is that located?

Should be right along side the lock cylinder or within 2 inches of it. Fix it now. If it locks while driving..... Oops!
