I missed your gear question....if it is a stock truck with less than a 33" tire on it but you are set on regearing I say a 4.10. it most likely has a 3.42 in it now

either you dont know how to use a calculator or your doing it wrong or someones stealing your gas lol
somethings got to be very wrong! haha Have you ever looked under your truck for a leak?

Its 162k old with no tune ups or replacement parts. Everything IS REALLY NASTY under the hood. I want to start replacing things one by one, but first I need to replace the radiator since it has a crack in it. Which means i Have to fill it with water every morning.

8mpg? get a tune up. I average 12 and that is with a 383 and I have a heavy foot.

I Envy you and your gas mileage. It is stock Im pretty sure, but isn't it the higher the gear ratio (lower the number) the less towing capacity it has and the better gas mileage? So like a 3.08 would get you alot better gas mileage then a 5.89?

162, holy shit!

Seamfoam that thing! I have a write up in the tech section.

Yes, recommend a TUNE-UP, new plugs (A/C Delcos are fine and OEM) and wires. You can score a MSD Coil Super Cheap, MSD Plugs are like 80 bux va JEGS. If you are balling on a budget, upgrade your AIR Filter to a K&N. If you got some bucks upgrade to a VOLANT INTAKE, b/c they make the BEST INTAKE for our trucks.

GL keep us informed!
I think Im going to take your advice and save up for the VOLANT INTAKE. I don't mind spending money If its going to be worth it and I can get this truck up to like 15/20mpg.

You are right on the gear numbers. But like I said your truck most likely has a 3.42 in it. A great all round upgrade would be the 4.10.

I might as well jump in and ask a gear question here... what do you recommend with a 35" tire (315's on stock rims)?
