with a budget like that id check craigslist. if you can spare another 100 dollars or so you can put yourself in a entirely different weight class. dont cut corners - do it right the first time and it will pay off in the end.

I have a custom fiberglass box with a pair of w1s or w2s and amp
The enclosure goes behind the 3rd row or 2nd if you bolt it down "i didnt bolt it down" so no holes in it and he speakers are prewired

look up on craigslist for infinity or jbl products, try and get an infinity kappa perfect 12.1dvc and look for maybe an alpine mrp500 or even a 450 and that will be more than enough power

and a kappa perfect in a sealed box 1-1.25 cu ft will give you pretty damn good quality with decent punch if you set the amp right

but i would expect maybe 100 a piece for amp and sub so you're already in 200 bucks without wires, but you wanna do it right the first time cause youre gonna overhaul it again real soon if it dont sound right

First post on my part, but I have had my share in car audio money spent and installs. The best 10 inch subwoofer that I have ever heard and had was a Boston G2 10 subwoofer in a slot ported box, however currently in my 05 Yukon Denali I have an Alpine Type R 12 inch subwoofer being pushed by at 1200 watt 2 channel amp using a line out converter from my factory Bose audio amp which I do not lose any base with the increase in volume I am extremely happy with the way it sounds the only thing I'm thinking of doing is changing the box. my best friend has a Tahoe and he has one kicker comp 12 being pushed by a kicker 5 channel amp but he doesn't have bose and I'd say his sounds equally as good if not better than mine only because he's actually put the money into the head unit and the amplifier along with all kicker components throughout. both stereo systems sound great with all varieties of Music so in my opinion its all into what you want to spend and how you want it to sound. sealed box, ported box just do the research and pick the best set up for the money and your ears, after all... That's who is going to enjoy it the most!

My advice for a $175 budget would to rock the factory equipment for a while and build that budget to around $500 before upgrading the audio. It's always better to save up and do it right the first time than going cheap and regretting it later.

Btw Rob, I work in Smyrna... ever hit the cruise-in @ the Avenue?

I currently have a pioneer AVH-p4000 DVD head unit hooked up to my Bose speakers.

The base is somewhat good, but I want just cleaner sounding speakers and a better, cleaner base.

I am thinking like 1 12" and an amp? Any suggestions? I don't want it crazy obnoxious, just a clean, crisp base sound for rap music but still want it to hit pretty hard!

Suggestions on which type, and what kind of box to get and what amp? I don't know much about this stuff so please explain!

P.S. Only wanting to sound around $150-$175

This can be done on your budget. Audio is subjective. I have hooked up friends systems for that price and they are happy, but I wouldn't use the same set up. For some a single 10 is enough. Most audio guys are brand loyal and can be snobs. I recommend visiting a few shops and listen to different set ups. Online has the best prices. Good luck.
