I have an AWD 2010 Yukon Denali. I've put about 13k on it so far. All road miles on driving vacations. Not towing anything.

Not sure of the right way to downshift and use the engine to brake when going down long grades.

The manual says to use tow/haul mode but that is erratic to say the least. Hit the brake and it can downshift way too far.

So now have started shifting down into Manual while in motion. Was afraid I was going to break something but seems to work ok. Seems like it pops into whichever gear you were in while in Drive. Much easier to downshift.

What do you guys use? Thanks.

mike1944,

The transmission is preprogrammed to protect itself. So if you shift into the M while doing 85 mph and toggle it down to the 1 for first gear, the transmission will shift appropriately but not immediately. I hope this answers your question.

Thank you,
