It could be clogged cats too. Mine were plugged so bad they were causing O2 sensor codes, MAF sensor codes, multiple cylinder misfire codes due to the engine " coughing", and after trying to fix all those and having the same symptoms I found the right cat was plugged and the left was half plugged. Same symptoms though- slam the throttle and it would fall on its face but let up and it went kind of normal. Idled and revved fine when not under load. My mechanic diagnosed the cats for $75 and I had a muffler shop change them for $600. Amazing power now.

Mine did this right as the fuel pump was going out. If I kept it floored it would often stall.

I considered the cats too... I know my fuel pump is new so that is probably last on the list to replace again. I live in a place without emissions testing so I may go get some exhaust tubing from the parts store and clamp them in place of the cats. I'm still going to do the knock sensors but it's just a lot of money I don't have. I bet I can get rid of the cats for 30 bucks though including new tubing and some clamps.

I would love to ditch my cats for some straight tubing, but I believe I have pre and post cat 02 sensors. I would have to get a programmer wouldn't i if I were to delete the cats?
