High RPM to shift out of 1st

I picked up my Tahoe last week (new to new from dealership) and noticed that it takes unusually high RPM for it to shift into 2nd (close to 3800 depending on throttle). Additionally, yesterday I stomped on the gas on the interstate and the transmission seemed to slip and the engine just revved out to 6000 instead of accelerating. Thoughts on the issue?

Have you checked the trans fluid level when the truck is warm? Also check the quality of it to see if its burnt or not!

Yep check trans fluid it's probably low

I guess I'll pull into the garage and check it out. I planned on changing out the fluid when I get back from vacation (leaving on Friday) in January so hopefully it's just low. Thanks a ton ... I've pretty much only driven manuals and literally know next to nothing about automatics.

After looking at the guide on http://www.agcoauto.com/content/news/p2_articleid/14, mine is somewhere between completely black and the dark maroon of the second to last color they show. Not sure how ATF should smell so I'm just guessing when I say it smelt burnt. Guess my plan to change the fluid and filter was a good idea, haha.

Yeah, if the fluid is that dark, then it's indeed time for a fluid and filter change for sure!!

I think a call to the dealership where it was bought from is in order. Any slipping is not good. You don't mention how many miles are on it. if under 100k then you might get lucky with a fluid and filter change. But if over 100k, it could be time for new electronic in the pan. Somehow I think the dealer knew about it if they do any kind of used car checks

It's at 161k. I'll try my luck with the filter and fluid change. Granted the dealership probably does owe it to me to give me the service on their dime, but I'd rather do it and know it was done with good products (AMSOIL is the only thing I use) than them put in something they have the shelf to save a few $. Push comes to shove and it's in need of a rebuild, I can make the transmission last until I can put in a quality aftermarket one. I've already looked around at these and the ones with what I'd want are close to $2300. The transmission shifts amazingly (except at WOT) and there are no other signs of anything truly being wrong with it, which is more the reason that I wanted opinions from the board.

On a side note ... my dad is sitting at just under 300k on his '04 1500HD and all he's needed on his transmission was a full servicing at 180k. With those odds I'd rather just get the servicing done and gauge the life left in the transmission at that point.

If the fluid smells burnt then you are going to have a bad day....what makes the fluid dark is clutch material.

A cheaper and more durable option if you do need a rebuild is an 80e swap.
