Hoe back storage

I do a lot of water sports activity's and have straps and pads always around.
I was looking at the rear of the hoe and inside on the back sides there are two rear panels one side has the jack and the other side has???
Anyway on each of the walls of these giant plastic covers there is a "lip" that if I cut around and then hinge I could make a small storage compartment on either side. Has anyone ever done this? Does anyone know what is behind these panels? Lastly how do I take them off without damaging them?

What year is your Tahoe?

In older models, the driver side holds a subwoofer and in all models the passenger side contains the rear HVAC system. In the later models with the subwoofer under the middle console, there is a little bit of room in the driver side, but not a whole lot...just enough for a jack and jumper cables.

The wheel wells also extend up into this area on both sides.

Duh, didn't even look to see which year forum this was posted in.

I believe in the NNBS Tahoes, the passenger side still contains all of the rear HVAC equipment. The driver's side contains the jack and, if equipped, the mechanism for the auto open rear hatch. You aren't going to get much in the side with the HVAC system and the driver's side isn't very large once you account for the wheel well and jack area.

I have a 2005, and there wouldn't be much spare room in either side. I'm just going on what I've read over the years regarding the NNBS hoes to answer your question. Maybe they made some changes in 2011 that I don't know about...

So what do you guys use for storage? I'd like to find something to put the headphones, jumper cables, and a can of fix-a-flat in for my wife.

i place my trailer ball hitch and a tow strap in the compartment with the jack and tire iron/tools

Why not just build a custom box to sit behind the 3rd row like many have done to house subs? Then you can have drawers or whatever you want for anything you want.
