How do I see text messages?

Probably a silly question but I can not figure this out for the life of me! I've only had my 2015 Yukon Denali for a few months, however I do now how to receive text messages from my phone through the system. I keep thinking it should be easy, but I'm missing something. Any tips? Thanks!

I don't have the factory head unit but mine reads them to me, I upgrade often and even years ago they read them to me, I don't think it's going to give you a text on the screen, maybe a notification that you have a text, however I would think if you are connected to bluetooth then it should read it to you as well.

Unless you have android it won’t happen. GM and Apple have different stories why it will not work with the factory head unit. I’ve heard droid will, but I’m an Apple guy.

If you have an Iphone you can setup Apple carplay, which basically brings most of the features on your phone to your vehicle.

Once you have that setup Siri will alert you when you get a text message and will prompt an option to read the message to you.

I have Android and in my 2016 Denali the text to voice feature worked well for the first year or so. Then one day it quit working and the dealer was no help. Now on my 2019 Denali the text to voice feature has not worked from day one. I'm suspecting that GM updated the software on me and my phone is not keeping up with the change.
