When the previous owner was towing that boat, did that Suburban have 4.10?
No. 3.73.
1st, although it MAY technically be enough gear (... or not ...), 4.10 would be better.
2nd, do you know if he towed in 'D' or 'OD'?

If he towed in 'OD' with 3.73, I'm glad that 4L60E made it as far as it did.
Even if he towed in 'D', 4.10 would be better.

No idea. I understand your point though. My point was that there is a lot of variability in the survival of the 4L60. That's all.

I agree with your point entirely.

My point is that the best ways to improve the 4L60E's durability / longevity (so far as I know) are:
4.10 or better axle gears
Tow in 'D' if your gears are less than 4.10

but unfortunately, not enough previous owners do those things ...

170k miles off the 6L80 in the 09 Escalade ESV 6.2L. Got it in ‘20 with unknown service history but could tell everything was original from the past two owners.

Cost was $5k to rebuild the original unit along with another $1.5k worth of parts & deferred maint.

I saved a butt load on labor for the motor mounts, exh mani, pan & oil tube pick up gaskets. Hit the fluid in front & rear diffs and both front diff mount dog bones with pre installed bushings.

The trans fluid was burned prior to going into limp mode in 3rd. I’m pretty sure if I would of flushed it in ‘20 it would of gone to 200k+.

07 Tahoe 187k 1 fluid change
15 Yukon 6 SPD, HMD, 6L-80 93k TBD. Kinda sad to hear how fragile the new trans are as the older ones have provided me with years of good service despite not being on top of preventive maintenance.
