How to inspect a used engine?

Hey guys,
considering getting a used engine from Blue Prism Automotive, how do you check the heads,crank,piston rings etc etc..
what do you look for when inspecting a big or small block for sale? can you help me from top to bottom.

@Eraschaub Are we talking about a used engine that’s already pulled?

Depending on how much time you have with it taking the valve covers off and turning the motor by hand will and watching the rockers will tell you a little bit about the motor if it’s clean inside and the rockers are all moving correctly but without running it I’m not sure how well you can inspect it without really opening the motor.

You can also look for damp spots where there might be an oil leak like near the valve covers and front and rear cover.

Purchase a used engine that comes with a warranty. It’s there to ensure you don’t buy someone’s motor with 90 weight oil inside to trade it in for a Cadillac.

Keep in mind if you buy it online with a warranty and it’s a dud, they pay for shipping out a new one to your door.

It’s no fun hauling motors around to parts houses.
