Strange, my garage door opener doesn't respond to Homelink buttons either.
Mine uses voice recognition technology.

I just programmed mine after getting a new Genie door opener. This is how I did mine.

Press and hold the 2 outside homelink buttons until light starts flashing fast...20 sec.

Hold door opener remote up next to homelink and press the button you want to use on homelink and remote button at same time. I use the middle button.

Go to your door opener motor and locate the "learn" button (mine is under the light cover) Press and release that button. You have 30 sec to do next step...

Go back to truck, press and hold the homelink button you chose...voila it should work.

Yes you should have to hold the homelink button for a second or two each time you open and close the door.

Just did mine as well today, but for training the garage to see Homelink, when I went back to the Hoe it says on the website to hold the button in the Hoe for 2 sec, and if the garage door doesn't open or shut, to repeat. It may take 3 tries. Mine worked on the second time. So if it doesn't work on the first time holding it for 2 sec's dont fret, try again.
