In the meantime while I'm scrutinizing all the parts, I thought I'd share this video with you guys. Not a 246, but I found it interesting.

Guys I've been looking and looking at this thing, fitting parts together, and I've disassembled everything. Without any knowledge of how much play is acceptable on certain moving parts, I've really not found anything other than what I've already posted. Well, other than a worn out inner drum shield. The part the wave spring sits on? No biggie, just another $20 part!

I have the wave spring, can anyone tell me if the stamped steel version is interchangeable?

Does anyone know how much play this shift fork or bracket is supposed to have in it? Mine flops around pretty good.

While i don't know that correct answer, i would guess there shouldn't be much play. Slop would make the motor have to move more before gear changes occur.
Mudsport96 I really appreciate you hitting me back on this. I need all the help I can get. The motor turns that shaft clockwise or counterclockwise depending on what gear is chosen so it's turning is not the issue I'm concerned with . It's lateral, up and down, back and forth movement I'm seeing. The shaft rides on a needle bearing I believe so that movement has to directly effect gear changes right? And the flopping around could definitely be a source of noise I'm thinking. A small roller pn the fork fits into the slot and it's only so wide. I don't see any evidence of it slipping out and marking anything though. Maybe the shift fork has enough play to "ride" along with it. Just guessing my self. Help me find someone that really knows these things.

While its disassembled, stack together everything that is splined, like it would be if the case was assembled. Then, check for slack in spline mating surfaces, and the planetary set. I am kinda grasping for straws here, but without a unit in front of me its hard to visualize.
Edit
Also, check the parts that slide for the high - low range change. Maybe something is out of spec there..
These don't have a high/ low range FYI.

It's got the NP8 Option which is the Dash mounted push button selector. "Auto 4 W, 2w drive, 4 high, neutral, and 4 low.
Sorry, I got the thread mixed up with another. I thought you had the NVG149, NP3 RPO. Never mind!

So hot tip for you guys. Actually two.

No 1. In post 193 the stamped version is a new and improved direct replacement for the wave washer.

No 2. Don't ever take this piece off unless you're prepared to pickup and replace a whole bunch of little needle pins! Ask me how I know. LOL!
