Wow this thing is making my head hurt. Back at it this weekend. My new bearing and seal didn't show up in time for this weekend, but I figured I could at least get the cir clip in (and work on some other stuff). I got the cir clip started. Apparently there is a groove just before the splines start. I got the cir clip in that far and thought I'd try using the shaft to work the cir clip into rest of the way (moving the shaft in a circular motion suggested by @OR VietVet ). The shaft is now engaged on the clip and I cannot get it back out. Had 2 prybars wedged up there trying to pry it out and it won't move.

I wouldn’t have used the shaft to install the circlip, that seems like asking for trouble since there’s a groove for the circlip to go into, as it seems you found out. A dowel or something like an appropriately sized socket with extensions, that doesn’t have a groove or can’t slip past it would have been my choice. I’m hoping you can get that shaft back out. Best of luck to you.

I could have swore something was said about pushing that cir clip in with a long pick or dowel of wood or a long flat blade screwdriver, just a little at a time in a circular pattern.

@OR VietVet use of different things were mentioned, but I don't remember anyone saying not to use the shaft.
I think I missed the part about using the shaft to install the circlip or I would have said something. The problem I see there is the shaft would be trying to slide through the circlip instead of pushing it down the bore.

I agree at this point you probably either need to say f it and either break the case open or like you said buy a used assembly. Actually either way you could open it up and see what you can do since the thing is worthless the way it is.
