Intake Manifold Gasket Leak?

I have read countless threads about the problems people have had with Tahoes and Yukons losing power and getting the shimmy/shakes or bucking when on slight inclines. It seems to be most prevalent when pulling a boat or trailer of some sort. This is true in my case anyway.

I have put remanufactured heads on my 1999 Yukon 5.7l vortec and , of course replaced the head gaskets and the intake manifold gasket. It didn't fix the problem a year or so ago so I put new head gaskets and intake manifold gaskets a second time with less than 5000 miles on the first set.

I have no oil in my water and no water in my oil. I am losing about 4 ounces of antifreeze every 250 miles or so. The engine has a slight miss at idle but that sometimes disappears when accelerating. When pulling my boat, particularly up a bridge the engine starts missing terribly. That goes away too if I accelerate aggressively and kick in much higher RPMS.

I have read a ton of differing solutions other people have found but they are often very different solutions. I am frustrated to the point of selling this thing and starting over. I use it only to pull my boat but I need it to be reliable for 4 and 5 hour road trips.

My opinion, which is pretty much useless at this point is that the intake manifold gasket still leaks and that it must only be leaking internally. I tried giving it the starter fluid spray test around the intake manifold but heard no difference in the misses it Has at idle. That's another reason I think it is leaking water internally.

I think I was very thorough installing the second set of gaskets so I don't understand why it would still be leaking.

Any thoughts would be tremendously appreciated.

A new twist to the bucking Yukon under strain today. I took it for a little ride an experiment. We have a steep grade bridge near my home so I started up it not pulling anything, but I set the cruise control at 55 mph. As soon as the incline began the Yukon started bucking. I pulled the auto gear shift into 3rd gear out of drive and it immediately stopped bucking. I shifted it back up to D and it started bucking again. When on the straight away it ran perfect.

Anybody got any ideas for a fix? I don't think this has anything to do with the small amout of antifreeze I am losing though.

Don't know if this will help but...

I too just had a new engine +headers + gaskets and a slew of other things done to my tahoe. Yet, for some reason I couldn't figure out why it struggled under heavy load and sounded like crap when going up a slight incline or towing something. I ran the gamut of tests and everything checked out. My problem ended up being a simple exhaust leak where the exhaust manifold meets the pipe. I replaced the Donut Gasket and wallah! No more strain on inclines and the power has returned. While I replaced so many things during my tahoe project it never occurred to me to replace the donut gasket. I just put the old ones back in because there wasn't an issue with them before I did any work on the engine/exhaust manifold.

The funny thing is, I passed my emissions test last week. One of the reasons I never thought to check for a leak as the problem. Anywho, something you might want to look into if you haven't already, unless you already have some sort of performance exhaust?

Some of the way to check: Get a long tube, one end to your ear and the other to all the exhaust ports. This difference in sound is unmistakable. OR, use some Seafoam and check for there's some white smoke leaking (have someone help you by putting their hand over the muffler, it'll increase the pressure for the smoke to seep out.

It is crazy that GM has has so many Intake Manifold Gasket issues over the years and from what I am able to find out they have never owned up to it being a bad design.

Just as crazy is how much people like these SUV's and go through so many diagnostics and fails to get them on the road again. I fit into that crazy category. I love the vehicle but it about drives me crazy sometimes.

I appreciate your input.

yes im having similar issues with mine i dont know weather its the intake manifold gasket or the missing bolt off the roight side exhaust manifold
or that oil inlet gasket i hear about
mine runs rough on a cold start and loses oil pressure at idol untill its warmed up
whats holding me up is the friggen missing bolt its broke off in the head i cant get it out
its at such an awkward angle ive drilled tried thread taping but i cannot get it to thread
so im about ready to say screw in and go replace the head
