So i want to pull off those UGLY side moldings on the doors! They are so ugly, Ive seen some of you on here took them off. Now im sure at least 1 person on this site has written up on how to do it, but i cant find it so im gonna ask again. What did you use to take them off and any color difference underneath???? THanks!

From what I have read before people have recommended taking them off by using a fishing wire. Those same people also recommended wearing gloves. To make the process quicker, preheating the panal with a dryer was recommended. I heard the process can take awhile though.

As far as the color underneath - the previous posts i read said they were replacing them with a crome panel. I have no idea what is underneath.

You need a heat gun to do it right. Heat guns are pretty cheap, under $40. A heat gun will loosen up the glue and they shopuld pull right off.

Also, depending on age and color, probably a good idea to have it buffed out afterwards.

I haven't removed my side molding, but have removed badges and such on other cars of mine before.

Like the others are saying make sure to heat it up and then just use some fishing wire to pry it off. Once the actual side molding is removed, you may need to use a product like the ones to remove bug/tar to get any of the excess glue of a little easier.

I pulled mine off by hand, the only issue was prying the edge up enough to begin removing each piece and WD-40 was then used to remove the adhesive residue left behind. If you have a buffer the job will be much easier... otherwise get ready to invest a few hours and some elbow grease depending on how many pieces you plan on removing. This mod took me a total of 6 hours, but I also chose to remove each and every badge/molding.

-50lb fishing line
-thick gloves
-Turtle Wax bug remover or Goo-Gone

It's very simple, just have to pry up one end of it, and use the 50lb fishing line like you do your teeth. Once you're done, if you have doublesided tape still on the truck, you can pull it off pretty easily. If you have glue or some type of caulking like I did, saturate it some of the Goo-Gone or Turtle-Wax bug remover overnight and it's easier to clean off. I only left mine on for 6hours.

I removed badges, side moldings and the wide body kit (fender flares) in this manner.

a heat gun can melt your paint off, so i would use a hairdryer. i've never had luck with the fishing line trick, i just pull the stuff off by hand. then i use goo gone GEL. then basic wax after.

no paint fade on my 01.

the hot sun was all i needed on my 03 silverado molding, then again the truck was only 2 weeks out of the factory.

I have used a heat gun on every emblem I have ever taken off and have never had a problem with the paint. However, I can see how it could happen if you used it on its high setting. Hairdryers cant get the glue hot enough from my experience.

i have never used a heat gun ive just pulled them off. Invest in a 3m eraser wheel that attaches to a drill. it removes the adhesive tape. easiest way to do it. then wash n wax.
