Just curious if this is normal about HVAC controls

When switching from something other than AUTO to AUTO, does the AC (snowflake) come on/light up automatically?

For instance, if it's cold and I have DEFROST on, then switch to AUTO, the AC comes on too and I usually switch it off.

Correct, auto to the actual defrost button put the snowflake on and the compressor will kick in. If you got from ac to just heat and set the fan selection to the defrost icon without lighting up the defrost button, then it will stay in heat and not kick the ac on.
