I also went through my pump last night, it's not terrible.
the housing looks pretty good
but the rotor and slide looks like it might have pumped/grinded up some little bearing bits.

I did some light cleanup of the rough bits, and i think i could use it.
but should i...

it's a $160 pump. :hahano:

It was pumping just fine, my oil pressure was great and stuff.
the idle oil pressure did start going under 40psi hot...
but i could still pin the oil pressure gauge at wot.

:hmmm2:

From your description, it sounds like the pump is fine. There's no need to peg the pressure. That's just excess load on all the seals involved. Based on your other symptoms (glitter in oil), your loss of pressure is not from the pump getting weaker, but from tolerances getting wider, likely cam bearing(s). Since you have the pump apart, why not port it? Oh- and pull out the relief valve to make sure there's no metal in there. You don't want it getting stuck open.

I was in the area earlier today, and stopped by a machine shop we used in auto shop class.
They have a pretty good reputation etc.
First i went against my better judgment and explained exactly what i was trying to do.

Guy did his best to be as nice as possible as he worked to understand and then poke holes in my plan.
Apparently i forgot to mention i ordered a brand new 6.0 block, and he thought i wanted to bore out my 5.3 to a 4in bore. :jester:

I also think i blew his mind with the information that the 5.3 crank and rods are the same as the 6.0.
He was doing the same super polite questioning of my logic, maybe he thought i was on drugs or something. :D

Anyways, it sounds like he wants $200 to do the balance and another 100 to work the crankshaft.

He also told me to bring in the pump, and he can give it a good look over.

And for the pistons, i went full circle and worked to find the matching pistons for the 799 heads and the 6.0 engine.
Looks like a 09 trail blazer SS used the 6.0 engine, with the 799 heads.
And used flat top pistons!

GM PN: 19178305
I found that this comes as a Mahle PN: S224-3665
and then ends up right back at my original piston find!
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/slp-h1129cpa

I also confirmed that the 5.3 rods have the PN: 12649190
And the 6.0 confirmed the same PN!

so i think i have my wrist pin size and all figured out now...

Thoughts?

ty!

and i was just dicking around with a compression ratio calculator,
So if the stock config of my 5.3 (per summit) is "9.9 : 1"
Keeping it the same but increasing the bore size should boost it to: 10.93 : 1

Might be getting up there to the needing premium fuel!
I need to calculate the DCR probably, but maybe i should go for some valve reliefs? :)

Edit: maybe i'm over thinking this and should embrace my new boosted CR!

been looking over my 5.3 block and taking note of other things i'll need to order.
Looks like the new block won't come with plugs.
Anything threaded should transfer over just fine.
However the oil gally plug at the front of the engine
Looks to be this one: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/btc-btr27693

Has anyone threaded it?
Or am i better keeping it with the standard plug?

And i got the cam bearings pulled
Sorta destructively, so don't pay attention to the edges. :)
