So I just picked up this Tahoe from state police. Runs and drive great up to about 35 then the trans slips. I have found rebuilds for around a grand but I searched and found a this video which make fixing this issue look like a piece of cake. 3-4 clutch pack and piston needs replacing. I am thinking about just pulling this myself and doing it on a weekend. Any thoughts or advice?

thats the same problem that my tranny had wich basically requires a rebuild the seal to the 3-4 apply piston over time shrinks wich intern causes the 3-4 clutchpacks to wear out faster wich eventually results the tranny shifting to 3rd and slipping
and no its not a piece of cake or easy fix becuase i was thinken the same thing and i was going to do it myself but with limited tools just pulling the tranny and putting it back in was a chore granted if you have access to a lift and transmission jack it cuts yer time in half
then i was going to tear it down and buy the rebuild kit and doit myself but i decided not to becuase ive only rebuilt a couple transmissions in the past and i wasnt completely confident my abilitys yet i opted to pay to have it rebuilt at a local shop and the upside to that is i got it warrantied and its an upgraded 4l60E now with a vette servo and a stage one shift kit and a new torque converter

How much was the cost of the rebuild? I also thought about going to the junkyard and finding a wreck. Most of the yards warrantee their transmissions. I have never rebuilt a transmission but this "transmission bench" on you tube sure makes it look easy with common tools. I have a friend with a lift so I can use to pull the transmission.

I had the 4l60e in my 96 vette rebuilt for $650 + a few extra add ons and fluid. But I dropped off the transmission, not the entire car to them. Just about double it if you don't pull the trans yourself. Good time to replace the rear main seal too. When the trans in the burb goes out, I'll just pull it myself and have it rebuilt.

I was thinking of doing this. I just ordered a trans jack as I do not feel like wrestling with it. Should be a simple job as its 2wd. I found a local guy that will rebuild it for around $350 plus parts but we will see if that is true. I watched that transmission bench rebuild videos on Ebay. Looks like an easy job but who knows. Still very intimidating.
