The larger dealerships will want to move their inventory fast, so they won't have as much BS going on. We bought our last Denali from Iowa, and our 2016 from AZ. both from large dealerships. Both vehicles we got at rock bottom prices, and both were painless experiences.

Not to hijack but how does it work with sales tax in your state if you're buying out of state? If I went to Laura and bought a Denali, do they take care of the NJ taxes or do I need to do that when I get the truck home?

Also how much have you guys paid for shipping these things back to your home state? It's probably cheaper to have it shipped rather than fly in and drive home.

Some states they collect sales tax and forward it to your state, I'm not sure about NJ though. Shipping should be $900 ish, good luck with the purchase.

Most of the time, Laura will collect the sales tax when you close on the truck. They will then cut a check and send it, along with the paperwork (MSO, bill of sale, power of attorney, etc...) to the tax collector/tag agency/DMV in your home city or state. I know in both FL and GA (where we have done transactions) it's not a big deal. They call you when the paperwork arrives. You go into the office, sign the title applications, pay any additional fees if owed, and walk out with your tag and registration. The title is issue by the state, and then sent to the lienholder if financed. (Unless you live in FL in which case the title is kept electronically in Tallahassee.)

Generally speaking, if the vehicle is financed, the bank requires the dealership to collect the sales tax. It protects the bank from getting a lien placed on the vehicle by the state.

Not a big deal....the $$$ saved over buying local still outweighs taking an hour out of your life to go to the tax collector.

Ok thanks. I figured it was something easy like that. NJ DMV can be a pain in the ass so I'm sure nothing will be easy.

I just bought my Yukon XL from a dealer in Ohio. They mailed me the white title, I brought that to NJ MVC with a form that I downloaded off their webpage (title application), filled out a vehicle registration form, got in line and had everything taken care of in about 20 minutes. Need proof of insurance as well.

I actually just received the NJ title and just have to mail it to the lienholder now.

Some states allow for the sales tax to be minimized if you are trading in a vehicle.

Example:

New vehicle: $50K
Old vehicle trade in: $30K
Taxable amount: $50K-$30K= $20K

So you are taxed on $20K rather than $50k.
